Abstract

Aims and objectives: This study was a pilot study aimed to explore the effectiveness of magic socks toward neuropathy foot of Diabetes mellitus patients.

Background: Diabetes Mellitus becomes a global epidemic which is considered to have the potential to cause a worldwide health care crisis. Every parts of the world are facing this heath problem which is rapidly increasing in each year. Foot complications are the common complications in people with diabetes. Three-fourth of the patients had a high-risk of further lower extremity amputations. The combination of temperature and massage is highly recommended to people with diabetes foot.

Design and method: 3 patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus who located in Bangkok were selected by convenience sampling and conducted the intervention by using the magic sock ten minutes for each time, one time a day for one week testing. Magic sock was created by using the two layer of sock. The inner sock was to put the feet and the outer one was connected with the pressure motor which will automatically put the pressure into the sock. The pressure will be maintained by the dried green beans which were warmed by microwave to be not more than 41 0C which is safe for tissue burn and damage.

Results: This try-out provided that the usage of the magic socks, the combination of heat and massage therapy, was helpful to reduce the numbness by promoting blood circulation to the whole leg. Two of them found that it was complicated to use and sometimes, made them more uncomfortable due to increasing of numbness. One of them said vibrations didn’t spreads equally so that he didn’t find it as so effective. But one of them found it helpful to decrease numbness.

Discussion and Suggestion: The experimentation period should be longer extended and increased the number of participants to test the effectiveness of the magic sock. The magic sock need to be developed for the elderly usage.
